The term «punto» is very widely used and occupies the 3.725 position in our list of most widely used terms in the English dictionary. Called Speedgear, they offer a whole raft of ratios – a veritable cog-fest – through an electronically controlled, continuously variable system which, on demand, also doubles as a sequential manual gearbox. The new transmission is available in either the five-door ELX or the three-door Sporting; the former with six stepped ratios in the sequential manual mode, the latter with seven – these being closer spaced.
Approximately 55,000 cars were built between April 1994 and June 1999, although the last cars were registered in 2000. The Punto was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, and originated atec hitting streak as a 1990 design proposal for Renault’s project X57, which would become the Renault Clio. When Giugiaro’s proposal was not chosen, he took the design to Fiat, who accepted it.
The familiar engine is reasonably refined for its segment, getting a bit noisy only under hard acceleration. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, now a part of the global conglomerate Stellantis, had some memorable cars in India over the years. While the company did bring in the American SUV brand Jeep to our shores, the Italian marque itself had some interesting products, and the Punto was one among them. The car was launched in India in 2008 as the Grand Punto, and after receiving a facelift in 2014, it was renamed as the Punto Evo. However, the company pulled the plug on the Fiat brand in India in 2018, thereby discontinuing Punto and other Fiat-branded products. Zero maintenance cost and superb comfort with the powerful engine.
The second generation Punto has also adopted the Dualdrive electric power steering and came with two operation modes, using an electric motor, rather than a hydraulic pump driven by the engine. A cabriolet version was also available; built by Bertone , it featured an electric-powered fully retracting roof and was one of the cheapest open-top cars in the world at the time. The in-gear timing is pretty good, especially the kph slog in fourth gear and the Grande Punto matches the lighter Swift. In fact, the Grande Punto’s weight (it’s 115kg heavier than the Swift) is what blunts performance. The doors shut with a weighty thud you only get in European cars.
In June 2016, Fiat introduced the new Techno Pack with the 5” touchscreen infotainment system and cruise control. Production of the Punto ended on 7 August 2018, with no direct successor being announced. However, it continued to sell in India for an additional two more months before production ended in October of that year. The last Punto assembled in Melfi was a red five door model.
A new Esseesse version was released in 2011, which was an optional upgrade that improved performance, with a 0–100 km/h time of 7.3 seconds. The Abarth Punto Evo was discontinued in 2015, after slow sales. The Grande Punto was launched in India during the Delhi Auto Expo in January 2008, with sales starting in June 2009. This resulted in reduced fuel consumption and less environmental impact. It has a fuel economy of 5.6 L/100 km (50 mpg‑imp; 42 mpg‑US), urban and 3.9 L/100 km (72 mpg‑imp; 60 mpg‑US), extra urban for the 1.9 diesel. The 1.8 petrol does 8.8 L/100 km (32 mpg‑imp; 27 mpg‑US), urban and 5.3 L/100 km (53 mpg‑imp; 44 mpg‑US), extra urban.
What’s also special is the flat and consistent manner in which the suspension works. There’s none of the nose-heaviness or heaving that plagues most front-wheel-drive hatchbacks. Quite simply, at highway speeds nothing comes close to the Punto. However, crawling through villages at slow to moderate speeds, there’s an underlying firmness that can be felt. The Petrol version comes with 1172cc engine capacity and Manual transmission mode.
