Getting Started with Threadless Body Jewelry

With an external thread pattern, the coarse threads have to pass through the piercing when inserting or removing the jewelry. This can tear or damage the skin around the piercing, especially if it’s a new piercing. At Infinite, we typically pierce tongues with 12g straight threaded barbells.

For men, a 14g straight threaded barbell shaft is used most often, typically in ⅜” to ½” lengths for the initial piercing, with healed piercings typically needing 5/16” to 3/8” lengths. Threaded jewelry is infinitely configurable, in that you can pair different size shafts with the appropriately sized end for your piercing. All threaded jewelry we sell is compatible with other pieces of the same gauge size, e.g. any 14g end from us will screw into any 14g shaft. Be aware that not all threaded jewelry is universal, and pieces from one company may not necessarily fit pieces from another.

Body jewelry can be broadly classified into threaded and unthreaded jewelry. Unthreaded jewelry basically doesn’t involve screwing a ball end into a shaft once you have inserted the shaft into your piercing. It can include things like captive rings, certain labret studs, hinged rings, hoop earrings, and more. If you’re fond of wearing body jewelry, you must have tha pyay nyo often come across the terms, ‘internally threaded’ and ‘externally threaded’. You may have overlooked this little detail but it’s actually crucial to know the difference between the two. Internally threaded jewelry is a much safer option but, with any piercing, you still could run into trouble—particularly if you have an allergy to a specific type of metal.

Correct materials with poor polish are just as bad as the wrong materials with excellent polish. Stuller is proud to expand our offerings in this area, starting with our new threadless Press Fit posts and backs made from 14-karat gold. As gold body jewelry grows in popularity, you’ll want to have the right things on-hand for eager customers. At first, the difference between internal and external threading may seem inconsequential.

“Internal threading would mean the threading goesintothe barbell itself,” says Brian Keith Thompson, a body piercer with Body Electric Tattoo. Internally threaded earrings have a screw in pendant which allows the post of the earring to glide smoothly through the ear piercing without causing trauma. The flat back of internally threaded earrings also allows for comfortable wear while preventing irritation, which may occur from traditional posts or butterfly back closures. The screw in mechanism also means the earring is more secure than traditional earrings with butterfly backs. Although at first glance the manufacture of threaded jewelry might appear to be of contemporary origin,[according to whom? ] there are examples of externally threaded, straight barbells being used by tribal people, most notably the Dayak of Borneo.

This can leave them with a nasty scar and potentially affect whether they can have that specific location repierced. Externally threaded jewelry doesn’t smoothly pass through the piercing. Not only is threadless body jewellery easy to fit, it has the added benefit of internally-threaded jewellery in that it can glide more easily through your piercing. Threadless piercing jewellery is an easy to use, push/pull fit style of body jewellery. Simply bend the pin on the attachment and push into the hollow shaft of your jewellery. The curvature of the pin will hold the attachment securely in place by way of tension.

Enter Press Fit, Stuller’s new threadless body jewelry system. Aside from externally threaded jewelry being produced in lower quality materials, the style overall has presented many issues. At Infinite, we typically use press-fit jewelry for eyebrow piercings, but threaded jewelry can be used as well. We usually pierce eyebrows with 16g curved posts in either 3/8” or 7/16” lengths, with healed piercings typically needing 1/4” to 3/8” posts. For a complete curved barbell shaft with balls on either end, choose a pair of ⅛” balls in steel or titanium for the removable ends. It is standard in the piercing industry to avoid externally threaded body jewelry.

Usually, externally threaded jewelry is made from 316L steel this is often referred to as “surgical steel” because it’s used in the manufacture of surgical instruments such as clamps and scissors. It’s important to note 316l is neither implant grade nor nickel free and widely regarded as not suitable for initial use in a piercing. Commonly external thread jewelry can even be a mixture of mystery metals that can’t be identified. Making the switch to threadless jewelry benefits both your clients and your studio! In this blog post, we will touch on what “threads” are, the different types of threading, as well as the different materials that are available when it comes to threaded and threadless body jewelry.

Such as a taper and switch to the threadless version whilst they build up confidence. That means making a small bend in the pin, then try taking it in and out of a post to test the tension and make sure it’s not too tight or too loose. As above some companies like Junipurr, now prebent their pins, you should still however check it and adjust it accordingly.

Now that you know the difference between internally threaded jewelry and externally threaded jewelry, you will be able to decide which one is better for your piercings. When you have to make a choice between the two, the first thing to consider is the freshness of your piercing. Internal threading is gentle on new piercings, whereas external threading is suitable for piercings that have healed completely. “Threaded body jewelry is jewelry — such as straight barbells, curved barbells, and circular barbells — that have balls that screw off of the ends,” explains Johnson. The “thread” is a spiraled ridge that winds around the metal like that on a screw or the inside of a nut.
