The preliminary examination requirement is waived for students who advance to candidacy by the end of their third year. Completion of a master’s project is required for the master’s degree. In consultation with the adviser, the student forms a master’s project reading committee of at least two faculty members, each of whom is provided a copy of the project report. The final project must be accepted by the review committee before the award of the master of science degree. The following are four sample academic plans for first-year students as preparation for the computer science major.
You may take one elective outside the certificate curriculum, if you receive prior approval from the Academic Services Department. Any 5-credit upper-division course offered by the Baskin School of Engineering, except for the DC courses CSE 115A and CSE 185E/CSE 185S. Students admitted to the Ph.D. program usually receive financial support in the form of a combination of fellowships, teaching assistantships, and/or graduate research assistantships. In computer engineering prepares graduates for a rewarding career in engineering through five specialized concentrations.
In May of 2000, Jim Kent, a biology graduate student at UC Santa Cruz who had a background as a computer programmer, approached Computer Science Professor David Haussler and offered to write an assembly program using a sampler strategy. Haussler had rigged together a makeshift supercomputer out of 100 Dell heidelberg university degrees Pentium III processor workstations for the genome project, but Celera was working with one of the most powerful computer systems available at the time, and their chances looked grim. Desperate to try anything that might allow academics to keep the genomic data open-source, Haussler gave Kent the go-ahead.
In 2022, the Baskin School continued this work finishing first truly complete sequence of the human genome, covering each chromosome from end to end with no gaps and unprecedented accuracy, is now accessible through the UCSC Genome Browser. Please note that only letter grades of C or higher may be applied to a certificate, and in some programs, students may have more stringent requirements. Students in most employer- and government-sponsored payment programs, such as workforce development, as well as international students on F-1 visas, need to maintain a B average to meet their requirements.
Up to three School of Engineering courses fulfilling the degree requirements of either the M.S. Or Ph.D. degrees may be taken before beginning the graduate program through the concurrent enrollment program. Each Ph.D. candidate submits the completed dissertation to a reading committee at least one month prior to the dissertation defense. The appointment of the dissertation reading committee is made immediately after the qualifying examination and is necessary for advancing to candidacy. The candidate presents his or her research results in a public seminar sponsored by the dissertation supervisor. The seminar is followed by a defense of the dissertation to the reading committee and attending faculty, who will then decide whether the dissertation is acceptable or requires revision.
Students who are informed that they are not eligible to declare the major may appeal this decision by submitting a letter to the department chair within 15 days from the date the notification was mailed. Within 15 days of receipt of the appeal, the department will notify the student, college, and Office of the Registrar of the decision. In cooperation with other departments on campus, CSE also offers a strong research group in bioinformatics, computational biology, biomolecular engineering, and human genome mapping. The CSE department enjoys a close relationship with the Electrical and Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics departments. Faculty members carry out joint research projects, supervise students, and teach courses for these departments. Degree requires either a master’s thesis or an approved project and is usually completed in two years, although it is possible to complete the program in one year.
PlayStation, Nintendo, Apple, Google, Zynga, Activision, Riot Games and 2K Games are just a few from a list of companies UCSC computer game design students have worked for, according to Jim Whitehead, professor of computational media. Every student must complete a minimum of 16 courses—eight lower-division and eight upper-division. Out of these, the eight lower-division courses and the first upper-division course are required preparatory courses for every student. Once these preparatory courses are completed, students tailor their own program by choosing seven upper-division elective courses.
Often, courses taken at other institutions which emphasize applications of current languages and computers do not count toward the computer science major at UCSC. The undergraduate program is part of the Computational Media Department, one of seven departments within the Baskin School of Engineering, located on the northern part of the UCSC campus. Whitehead pointed out that the computational media department is not the only department involved in video game development, and games generally, at the university, with courses also offered through the games and playable media program. Furthermore, transfer students entering in the fall must have completed at least three of these courses by the end of the fall term of the previous academic year and have a minimum 2.80 GPA over all completed CS major qualification courses at that time.
Students of every major must satisfy that major’s upper-division Disciplinary Communication requirement. Applications of computer science are found in many other areas of study, from art and music to business and science. Students with only four of these requirements may be admitted if they have completed CSE 16 and CSE 12.
