My Epic Hair-Breakage Disaster Shows the Risk of Bleaching Too Much

Peek-a-boo hair is all the rage right now in hair fashion. Luckily, it is not hard to dye your hair in the peek-a-boo style. With a peek-a-boo style, either the bottom layer is dyed a different color from the top layer or different colored highlights are made throughout the hair. The color is only visible when it shows through the top layer of hair. The peek-a-boo look will work on any type of hair, in any color. You just need to decide if you want a wild color like hot pink or a natural color like black.

Then he layered highlights and lowlights, alternating back and forth until there was natural-looking dimension. The chemical formulae of alternative color dyes typically contain only tint and have no developer. This means that they will only create the bright color of the packet if they are applied to light blond hair. Darker hair would need to be bleached in order for these pigment applications to take to the hair desirably. Some types of fair hair may also take vivid colors more fully after bleaching. Gold, yellow and orange undertones in hair that has not been lightened enough can muddy the final hair color, especially with pink, blue and green dyes.

Unfortunately, it also has some unwanted side effects in the form of weakening hair strands. As a result, you may see changes in your hair including frizziness, dryness, or hair breakage. You usually can’t safely or effectively change your hair color too dramatically, especially at home. Trying to change your hair by more than three tones decreases the likelihood of your success.

Generally, the hair closest to your scalp lightens faster than the rest of your hair, because your scalp gives off heat and speeds up the process. Aura says bond-building and restructuring products are “incredible for repairing hair” post-bleach. Her current favorite, K18 Peptide Masque ($75), also happens to be my go-to these days; I swear it’s the reason I’ve had very little breakage throughout my silver-hair journey. Of course, Olaplex is another option; an option Walker and a zillion other pros swear by for healing protein bonds broken in the bleaching process. Both Mesquit and Walker advise steering clear of anything higher than 20 volume.

And when it comes to using bleach, one of the most popular questions centers around how long bleach should be left in the hair. Below, we’re sharing the answer to that question as well as what happens if you exceed the recommended time. Henna is orange, and indigo is blue, so as complementaries on a standard color wheel, the two colors’ combined front pieces of hair dyed red effect is to create brown tones. Like henna, indigo may fade after one application, but it becomes permanent on the hair with repeated use. Hair coloring involves the use of chemicals capable of removing, replacing, and/or covering up pigments naturally found inside the hair shaft. To the surprise of no one but me, I loved the finished product.
