Personally I’ll give one of the other parks in the area a try next time. We actually intended to stay bryce canyon pines campground about 50 miles south, but a fire changed our plans. The sites are a little tight, but not horrible.
If you’ve got the stamina for it, you can climb to the top of these dunes, but beware of hiking in the midday summer sun when the sand is blisteringly hot. The facility has tons of amazing animals native to the Rocky Mountain Front, such as elk, grizzly bears, and mountain lions. You can even watch the staff feed the animals and learn about the behavior and habitat while you’re there. When I called to reserve two days during the week I was told they had one spot left that was $42.
Guests love that they can choose from shaded or sunny sites, as well as sites along the river or a spot among the trees whether they’re staying in a tent or an RV. A few along the river, but the majority in the main park are a short walking distance to the river. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. The Rio Chama developed campground is an excellent choice for fun family camping on the edge of a wild and scenic river.

The park is fully staffed, clean, and they’ll even help you park. My spot is a back-in and the staff even helped guide me in.
