Uber Celebrates Five Years in Puerto Rico Business

In regards to drivers, the companies must ensure that mobile applications include a driver photo as well as the vehicle model and plate numbers. Companies also must set up a resident agent to ensure compliance with the new laws. This restriction is tiresome and frustrating for tourists and Uber drivers, especially because taxi fares to and from the airport are much more expensive is uber in puerto rico than an Uber. This page lists all available rideshare services that RideGuru tracks for Villalba, Puerto Rico. Scroll down for nearby airports and transportation hubs where rideshares may be available. Was there in March- prices change super fast, so check multiple times and have multiple people check (sometimes it was cheaper on my spouse’s app than on mine).

This allowed us to do things like check out beaches in other towns and buy a lot of heavy items at the grocery store without having to physically carry our haul back to our Airbnb. Honestly, we’d figured that we would just Uber something when we got to Puerto Rico . We discovered immediately upon landing that the service for Lyft is non-existent, and Uber is apparently only available some of the time and in a very limited capacity. So limited, in fact, that Uber only seems to operate in the San Juan area…or so one of our cab drivers told us later in the trip. If it is your first time in Puerto Rico, you will be happy to know that almost all car rental companies have a presence on the island. Airport Shuttle & Transfer– As mentioned above, Uber does not have an airport presence in San Juan.

We receive compensation for referring traffic to ShareASale and its merchants. If you are from somewhere other than the US, tipping all the time may feel strange, but tipping your taxi and Uber drivers is pretty common practice in both mainland USA and in Puerto Rico. Every time you order an Uber, it will charge that card with the amount shown to you before booking. Most rides I took were from Ocean Park to Old San Juan and back again.

There is no central source of information about público schedules or prices, but you can ask around at a público terminal or van stand near a smaller town’s central plaza. Or, you could try asking a local in the town – someone who looks like they might be a regular público user. They may be able to tell you when the next van is due to arrive, and how much it costs to use the service.

When scheduling a ride in advance, and needing to change the pickup time, if you search and search, you’ll find instructions for doing that under canceling a trip. Trouble is, the process for revising a pickup time, as described, doesn’t exist. After burning a good deal of time trying to come at it, every which way (forget trying to contact the driver, you can’t), the only option is to cancel the trip and schedule a new one.

Uber and until recently, Lyft, can be found in the San Juan Metro area and in Ponce. During our time on the island, we only found drivers in San Juan. You may find a ride-share that will drive you to your hotel from the airport in San Juan but, do not expect to find one when returning to San Juan or anywhere else. On the island, Uber Reserve is available for UberX and Uber Comfort products. Daniel Gillaspia is the Founder of UponArriving.com and creator of the credit card app, WalletFlo. In addition, 1.7 million Puerto Rico residents registered and used the app at least once on the island during the past five years. Of these, 34,000 took their first trip on Uber during the COVID-19 pandemic. If you are trying to get from the airport, you may be forced to book a city taxi.

If you already use the app, you can rest assured you will be able to use it in exactly the same way you use it in your home country. But we love traveling so much that we can’t let any of that stop us. ➡️ For those arriving to the SJU Airport, we recommend booking your transfer here with Transport and Experiences Puerto Rico. This doesn’t mean that they are pulling someone over or going to a scene. They only do these things when the lights and the sirens are on.

We knew that because we were renting a car one-way, we’d need to pay extra to drop off the vehicle in the neighboring town of Aguadilla, which is the closest car rental location to Aguada. It is important that you have the exact amount when you pay since some drivers may not provide change. Also, some tourists complain that the taxi drivers are not as pleasant as most Uber drivers.
