Winthrop University was founded In 1886, when the Peabody Education Board of Massachusetts, headed by Robert C. Winthrop, provided $1,500 to form the “Winthrop Training School” for white women teachers. That year the school opened its doors to twenty-one students in Columbia, South Carolina.
